06 Oct Annual Conference 2017 – SUMMER IMPACT
Annual Conference 2017
By Carolyn Shain
I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the AJLI Annual Conference, titled Distrupt Convention, with President Missy Zenczak and Sustainer Ann Zenczak, from May 16-21, 2017 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
As part of The Next Chapter, Ann and I attended sessions primarily geared to sustainers such as Education in a Changing World, Leading Through the Turn and The Ask to name a few. I enjoyed hearing the keynote speaker, Cheryl Strayed, who wrote the book Wild and shared the story of her arduous trek on the Pacific Crest Trail. I was reminded of the thousands of women contributing to the enrichment of our international communities.
As a JLT past president, twice, I was heartened to again be among this dynamic group of women. Training is our mission and it is obvious how professional and dedicated the Junior League is in maintaining this theme. Diversity is an obvious thread that runs through the membership; not just culturally but age-wise as well. As is obvious in JLT so it is true within AJLI: the sustainers are very valued for their experience and knowledge.
I so appreciate being given the opportunity to continue my training in the Junior League. And my thanks to Missy for encouraging her mom, Ann, and me to try a different mode of transportation to dinner. We also experienced Prince’s (an impersonator) music and “antics” at the final dinner. He was from Minneapolis, you know!
