Sustainer of the Year: Linda Mares Titus

GETTING TO KNOW LINDA

Longtime Sustainer Linda Mares Titus has been named this year’s Sustainer of the Year. Linda was born in Seattle, lived in Lafayette, CA, and on Mercer Island, where she graduated from Mercer Island High School. A Cum Laude graduate of Washington State University with a bachelor of arts in business administration and an emphasis in finance, Linda worked at Puget Sound National Bank and Key Bank as an Assistant Vice President, Tax Manager and Trust Tax Officer; Portfolio Manager and Trust Investment Officer for 14 years. She is currently Vice President of the Bruce Titus Automotive Group. Linda recently went back to school to obtain her interior design license and is President/Owner of LMT DESIGN.

Linda has been married to her husband, Bruce, for 33 years. They have four children, Courtney (Nick), Michael (Erika), Kelly and Matthew, ages 14 to 32. Linda’s ‘elevator speech’ is, “Four kids, over three decades, with the same guy!” They were blessed with a grandson on July 20, 2016 and a Cavapoo puppy on September 24, 2016. Linda enjoys snow and water skiing, hot yoga, tennis, golf, gardening, traveling and interior design. She loves spending time with her family and friends at their beach house, White Pass condo and LaQuinta home.

LINDA AND JLT

Linda became a provisional of JLT in 1990–1991 and an active member in 1991–1992. She was active for eight years and became a sustainer in 1999. Linda was busy in her JLT activities serving in the following ways: Done in a Day Chair (evening projects), Follies Sponsorship/Underwriting Chair, two years as Impact Editor, Funding Development Chair, Decorator’s Show House and Garden Tour Sponsorship/Underwriting Chair, and Finance VP. She served as Director of the Sustainer Advisory Council (SAC) in 2012–2013 and is currently a member of SAC. When asked what she liked best about League, she replied, “Positively impacting our community and making new friends.”

LINDA AS AN OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER

Linda is an exceptional volunteer in the greater Tacoma community. She has taken the many skills she learned through her formal education, work experience and JLT trainings and has volunteered by serving on the following boards:

St. Pat’s School REACH Auction, 2016 REACH Co-Chair with Bruce Titus, COFIA – Circle of Friends in Action, Tacoma Garden Club, Tacoma Art Museum, Children’s Museum of Tacoma, Holiday Cotillion Chair 2005, Bellarmine PRIDE Auction, 2002 PRIDE Co-Chair with Bruce Titus (Received Father Sneeringer Award in 2003 for service to Bellarmine), Tacoma Farmers Market and Junior League of Tacoma.

Currently, Linda is a member of the Susan G. Komen Lunch for the Cure Committee, the Children’s Museum of Tacoma – Right to Play Council, Tacoma Garden Club, JLT Sustainer Advisory Council and Delta Gamma.

She recently served on the Bellarmine Campus Center Campaign Task Force and also volunteered at the US Open at Chambers Bay in 2015. Linda’s volunteer work at St. Patrick School includes procuring the 20′ Celtic cross and signage for the school entrance, re-landscaping, coaching cross country, planning Grandparents’ Day, working on the REACH Auction, and the Facilities Committee. Linda was a recipient of the Metro Parks Award for her contributions to the Garfield Park Playground Fundraising Committee. She also volunteered in the Lion’s Den at Bellarmine for 10+ years and co-chaired Bellarmine’s Senior Breakfast in 2004. Linda and her husband Bruce are lifetime WSU alumni association and foundation members.

Thank you, Linda, for exemplifying the four criteria required for The Ruth Wheeler Sustainer of the Year Award (see below). Thank you for sharing your talents and leadership skills with JLT and our community. You have been instrumental in helping many organizations and schools in our community have extremely successful fundraising campaigns. You emulate the qualities of an outstanding volunteer and are an example for all of us. Please continue your volunteer efforts and know that we in the Junior League of Tacoma are very proud to call you one of our own.

THE RUTH WHEELER SUSTAINER OF THE YEAR AWARD

This special award was established in 1988 in honor of Ruth Wheeler, a charter member and the second president of Junior League of Tacoma. This award recognizes the valuable contributions that our sustainers continue to make in our community and the excellent examples they set for us. The award is given to the sustainer who has demonstrated through current efforts: 1) the spirit of volunteerism, 2) the value of specialized training, 3) the effectiveness of advocacy, and 4) the qualities of organization, responsibility, community concern, and caring for others.
