Nominations are accepted annually for the Ruth Wheeler Sustainer of the Year Award. This special award was established in 1988 in honor of Ruth Wheeler, a Charter Member and the second President of The Junior League of Tacoma. It recognizes the valuable contributions that our Sustainers continue to make in our community and the excellent examples they set for us. The award is given to the Sustainer who has demonstrated through current efforts: 1) the spirit of volunteerism, 2) the value of specialized training, 3) the effectiveness of advocacy, and 4) the qualities of organization, responsibility, community concern, and caring for others.
Ruth Wheeler was presented with the first award in May 1988 for her outstanding contributions to the Junior League of Tacoma and to her community. Any Active, Sustainer or New Member of The Junior League of Tacoma or anyone in the community may make nominations.
The Junior League Prayer
Prayer written by Ruth Wheeler (circa 1956)
We pray, that we may never be so blind
That our small world is all we ever see;
Or are so supremely satisfied
That what we are is all we want to be.
Give us the joy of feeling someone’s need.
Make us gracious followers,
Make us gracious to those who lead.
But more than all, we pray that though the years,
We will remember that there are always new frontiers.
