Event Recap: The Summit was a multi-media presentation which provided community information and member education on youth experiencing homelessness (youth up to 25 years old). Members of Tacoma Stands Up performed a powerful and moving poetry monologue based on True Grit which described what it’s like to be homeless as a youth. Moderator, LaMont Green, got the audience moving by doing interactive statistics of what youth homelessness looks like in Pierce County. The summit featured a panel discussion with six experts on youth homelessness including: Panel Moderator, Lamont Green, Senior Policy Analyst, City of Tacoma; Cathy Nguyen, Co-Director, Tacoma Stands Up; Kurt Miller, Executive Director, Community Youth Services; Linda Martin, McKinney Vento Liaison, the Tone Center; Linda Seferian, McKinney Vento Liaison, the Tone Center; and Simone Gamble, Social Worker and member of Tacoma Stands Up and former youth who experienced homelessness.
Call to Action: At the close of the Summit, audience members were encouraged to sign letters of support (advocacy), to donate funds to benefit the new youth shelter to provide beds (capacity building), and to volunteer in the community as direct service advocacy representatives (promoting voluntarism).
Letters of Support Signed: 60 letters of advocacy supporting more funding for youth experiencing homelessness were sent to Tacoma legislators including Mayor Strickland and three Council Members on the homelessness committee.
